Mapping a Shared Directory (on a Windows Server Computer) to a Drive Letter

Quick Guide

• Connecting to "slaney" (really \\minsky.med.unc.edu\slaney)
• Connecting to CF shares/groups/users

Introduction:

• Mapping a shared directory to a drive letter is recommended, and makes finding the directory faster and more convenient. e.g. In the "Computer" window above the Y: drive is a networked shared resource called "slaney" (like a directory) on \\minsky (server name) which has been mapped to that letter.  The drive letter can be automatically set to be ready to connect to \\minsky\slaney next time one logs on if the computer.
• Note that in the examples below  \\152.19.10.204  is equivalent to  \\minsky.med.unc.edu or \\minsky
• Note if you are connecting from off campus then UNC Cisco VPN must be installed and run (An Onyen account required) along with the DUO phone app. for 2 factor authentication before attempting a connection to shares on \\minsky.med.unc.edu, e.g. \\minsky.med.unc.edu\slaney, \\minsky.med.unc.edu\cf-center or even \\ad.unc.edu\med\cf
• Note these resource can also be mapped to from Apple and Linux computers

Mapping to a drive letter:

• Open a "Computer" window or hold down the windows-key and press the letter E  
• Or click on "Computer" on an already open "Computer" window
• 
• Click on "Map network drive"

• 
• Choose a drive letter. e.g. Y:
• Enter a resource "Folder" - e.g. \\minsky.med.unc.edu\slaney, \\minsky.med.unc.edu\cf-center
• Check "Reconnect at logon"
• Check "Connect using different credentials"
• Click "Finish"

• 
• Note "Domain: AD" means domain has defaulted to AD (the Onyen domain) and needs to be over ridden (see just below) for the \\minsky server

• 
• Enter your MHmicroscopy user name (sometimes called \\minsky user name). Don't forget the domain "mhmicroscopy\" before your user name.
• Enter your MHmicroscopy password
• Check "Remember my credentials" (only works on computers not joined to the AD domain)

• 
• Mapped successfully!
